Brampton mayor issues Naw-Rúz proclamation
In response, the Local Spiritual Assembly describes how the Bahá’í community is renewing its efforts to strengthen the moral and social fabric of community life.
Earlier this month, Mayor Patrick Brown issued a Naw Rúz proclamation at City Hall in Brampton, Ont., acknowledging the significance of this day for more than 300 million people worldwide, including Bahá’ís.
The Local Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Brampton were invited to respond to this proclamation on behalf of the Bahá’í community:
“For the Bahá’í community, Naw-Rúz marks the beginning of a new year, but more importantly, it marks a renewal of responsibility. After a period of reflection and a 19-day fast, we begin again with a clearer sense of purpose.
In a practical sense, that purpose is simple: to contribute to the well-being of the communities in which we live.
In Brampton, and in Bahá’í communities around the globe, that work takes concrete form. Throughout the year, members of our community and our friends host children’s classes that nurture qualities such as kindness and truthfulness; junior youth groups that help young adolescents develop moral reasoning and a spirit of service; study circles that bring neighbours together to reflect and act on spiritual principles; and devotional gatherings that create space for prayer and reflection across backgrounds.
These are small but consistent efforts aimed at strengthening the moral and social fabric of neighbourhood life.
It also means supporting youth as they take ownership of their role in society, not only as future leaders, but as contributors today, capable of service, initiative, and constructive action.
We live in a time when public life can feel polarized and uncertain. Naw-Rúz reminds us that renewal is not automatic; it requires intention. It requires cooperation. It requires each of us to see ourselves as responsible for the whole.
Our community is committed to partnering with others across this city to build neighbourhoods marked by justice, respect, and shared purpose.”
Happy Naw-Rúz!
